Gr 1–3—This book opens with a discussion of the nutrients in the various food groups. Coverage of the MyPlate sections—fruits, grains, vegetables, protein, and dairy—includes practical, straightforward advice on how to incorporate the foods into daily meals, and world maps show either the foods' origins or what gets consumed in particular regions (such as the fried grasshoppers that provide protein in Africa). Most helpful are the lists of portions. For example, 12 baby carrots (from the "One Cup List") and 5 broccoli florets (from the "1/2 Cup List") satisfy the amount of vegetables needed by children who are between four and eight years of age. The picture-heavy, colorful design helps readers to grasp the information easily. This is a serviceable resource to replace food pyramid books.—
