Gr 9 Up—The first in a new documentary series on economics focuses on the community-based economy in Northern Italy's Emilia-Romagna region. Its capital, Bologna, is a manufacturing and commerce center, while the area as a whole is home to a high concentration of cooperative, democratically run businesses, where employees share in ownership and make decisions on how to run the companies. The region's stable yet flexible economy, with shared prosperity and contracted government services (such as elder and child care), is an example of the power of cooperatives. The program provides an overview of one type of sustainable economy and an opportunity to compare it with other economic systems.
