This compendium celebrates the comics format while educating readers on lesser-known information about the Holocaust. Each comic is prefaced by an introduction laying out the historical context. Similar to how fables are used to explain complex lessons to children, here the heightened stakes of superheroes and other comics characters make the true horror easier to discuss. These pieces focus on the Jewish victims of the Nazis. A range of genres are on display. The grisly parable "The Tattooed Heart" represents horror, "The Master Race" is an exemplary noir short story, and the Captain America and Batman tales showcase classic superheroism at its finest. Given the rise of contemporary Nazi groups and the subsequent increase in anti-Semitic hate crimes, this is a timely work with an important message.
VERDICT An educational, thought-provoking collection, especially for school libraries.
