Gr 6 Up—A dedicated young biologist, Holly Carroll, explores the world of the great apes in this six-episode series. Each centers on a specific primate, such as gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, and man's closest relative, the rarely seen bonobos. Narrated by Carroll, the film follows her arduous journey through remote areas of Africa and Indonesia as she attempts to film these endangered animals in their natural habitats. However, their elusiveness results in most of the footage being shot in sanctuaries or rescue stations. Nevertheless, the interactions among the animals, particularly those involving the mothers and babies, are a highlight of each episode. The first episode offers a good overview of the entire series and could be used as a stand-alone. The remaining sections tend to follow a recurring format, focusing on the effects of environmental degradation and human cruelty, as well as the good works of sanctuary workers and those involved with attempting to save the animals. Conversations with Jane Goodall recount the early studies that inspired Carroll and highlight Goodall's efforts over five decades to ensure the safety and survival of these highly intelligent beings. Some may find a short scene of the peaceful bonobos copulating inappropriate for younger viewers.
VERDICT Episode 1 may be useful in animal biology or endangered species studies. However, the other segments, although heartfelt and well intentioned, are repetitive and may not offer enough information to merit the viewing time.
