Gr 9 Up—Misuse, abuse, and poisoning by prescription drugs have increased by more than 400 percent in the last 10 years, according to this documentary, primarily funded by the Office of National Drug Control Policy. It goes on to detail the history and current state of the use of three classes of prescription drugs: opioids and painkillers, benzodiazepines and barbiturates, and stimulants, such as amphetamines. Adolescent use of prescription medication is highlighted. Internet searches for novel experiences has led to much misuse of these substances, including at "pharm parties," where attendees bring prescription drugs, often from a parent's medicine cabinet, as the price of admission and where pills of unknown variety are taken, usually with alcohol. The film intersperses interviews with users, parents of overdose victims, and health and legal professionals. However, with lots of statistics and personal profiles of adults, it may not hold the attention of the intended audience.
VERDICT This is not a film to entertain but one that is important to have for public library general collections and for high school health or sociology classes.
