Gr 9 Up—This documentary honors the 60th anniversary of the Korean War through a collection of narratives capturing the experiences of those who served. While the Korean War continues to have an uncertain positioning in American history, the fascinating and gripping lives of the service people engaged in active duty emphasize the struggles, sacrifices, and loss surrounding this pivotal conflict. Some of the wartime recollections are universal, but many of the stories explore themes of racial integration and the shifting American identity from a more personal perspective. The film additionally goes on to explore the aftereffects of returning home to a divided nation, where the struggles of the soldiers primarily went unacknowledged. Although the producers make effective use of archival films and photographs, it is ultimately the individual stories that will impact viewers.
