Gr 1–4—This slim picture book is a testament to the wonder of nature. Chloe and Zachary are spending a week at their grandparents' cottage. When a storm knocks out the power, their tablets are rendered useless. The siblings have to find another way to have fun and quickly discover that the natural world is the best playground. The book is illustrated by the Tobin Island Artists, so there are a variety of styles—realistic, impressionistic, cartoonlike—but they all fit together and highlight the beauty of the environment. The straightforward, simple text emphasizes the importance of unplugging and playing outside.
VERDICT This quiet tale would be useful to read before taking a similar vacation or convincing kids to spend time outdoors.
