PreS-Gr 3–A bright red tractor lives on Finca el Gran Roble with his best friend, a cart named Lili. Tractorcito knows all the farm animals by name—duck, pig, dog, hen, and horse. As spring starts, he sees a pair of swallows nesting in his barn. Early on, Tractorcito thinks the birds are rude for moving into his space, but he gets used to having them fly around—until they pry open a window during a downpour! When Sra. Golondrina lays her eggs, she and Sr. Golondrina take turns to keep them warm until the chicks hatch, yet Tractorcito feels out of place and complains to his animal friends. He’s embarrassed that his hood is dirty because of the birds and confronts them, but later decides to share his barn because sister swallow Adela has taught him how to be a friend. Keeping the barn window open helps out the Golondrina family, and all the farm animals give Tractorcito a good scrub until he’s once again shiny—and his heart is full. This tale about making friends is especially appealing for young children who will enjoy hearing it read aloud. The art is reminiscent of Tad Hills’s work. Tractorcito’s expressions are charming, and his exclamations will amuse young readers and adults alike.
VERDICT A nice choice on a perennial subject that would be right at home on Spanish-language picture book shelves.
