Gr 9 Up—This video about adult autism features 12 adult individuals who fall at various positions on the autism spectrum. All participated in the editing and preproduction of the program, and gave substantial testimony to the challenges and successes associated with their disorders. Each is filmed performing daily tasks or relaxing in his or her home. Three of the subjects are female, which is proportional to the general distribution of female to male subjects with autism. They all have talents that allow them to work, and many have university degrees. The challenges that they face, however, include anxiety, fear, temper tantrums, and feeling as though everyone else has a script. They can't read body language, facial expressions, or voice intonations. They may be intellectually capable, but they are socially disabled. Some are also physically challenged, but that is not generally related to autism. Without downplaying the bullying, isolation, and stigmas related to autism, they feel positive about their capabilities and their lives. All express the positive effects of becoming involved with autism support groups. Accompanying material gives contact information for such support groups, support activities, as well as biographical information about the featured adults. Although this documentary is about adults, it would be encouraging and inspirational for teens with autism, or those with family members who are on the spectrum.—
