Time Out to Rock

PreS-Gr 2—The Not-Its! jump out of the gate and keep going full speed ahead on their second recording for kids. The Seattle-based band features the superb lead vocals of Sarah Shannon and four very talented musicians—Danny Adamson (rhythm guitar/vocals), Noni Hoeft (bass/vocals), Tom Brisen (lead guitar/trumpet), and Mike Bayer (drums/vocals/keyboards). They rock the house with their skillful performances on each of these 11 original songs. The kid-centered lyrics receive a very grown-up sound. Highlights include the opening number, "Welcome to Our School" (fuzzed out guitar and tight harmonies star in this song about the first day of school for a new girl), "Green Light, Go!" (stop lights will never be the same after hearing this tribute with a heavy metal edge), and "Time Out to Rock" (time out given not as a punishment, but as permission to go high energy). The mature music will please parents, as well as their kids. This one's a keeper!—Stephanie Bange, Wright State University, Dayton, OH
In this beautiful, heartrending, yet horrifying film, North Koreans tell their stories of imprisonment, sexual slavery, torture, murder, and escape to China or South Korea during the nearly 50-year regime of Kim Il Sung (1912—94). The interviews are illustrated through the interspersion of dance sequences, archival news footage, and drawings. Particularly interesting are the North Korean propaganda films celebrating Kim Il Sung as God and showing in the face of mass starvation happy workers, elaborate military displays, and the creation of a new flower in 1988 in honor of the 46th birthday of Kim's son and successor, Kim Jong Il. A valuable time line traces 20th-century events in Korea. Bonus features include previously unreleased footage of camp refugees. This mesmerizing film displays excellent production values and is highly recommended for Asia collections.—Kitty Chen Dean, formerly with Nassau Community Coll., Garden City, NY
