Gr 1–4—Beginning researchers will glean basic facts about each biome in these straightforward introductions. All include at least one map noting a specific example, such as the pampas of South America, or a world overview. They discuss representative animals and plants and mention adaptation, a topic treated most extensively in Deserts. Lynch emphasizes food chains and webs in his volumes, including diagrams in Lake and Ocean. For the most part, stock photos adequately illustrate the text. However, the image of the U.S. Great Basin facing a discussion of Antarctica's cold desert seems misplaced in Deserts.
VERDICT Acceptable choices to supplement available resources for report writers.
