PreS-Gr 1–Theo, a natty frog in overalls, dreams of becoming a prince. He’s heard all the stories, and he knows that the only thing he is lacking is a princess to give him a kiss. He searches all over town, and almost gives up. He makes a Wanted poster, and the princesses show up, but he remains a frog. DeLange delightfully upends the tale of the frog and princess; a lady frog appears and it is love that makes Theo feel absolutely princely. This animal kingdom, of various anthropomorphized residents drawn in soft colors, is charming. Human characters are winsome and it seems to be a place where everyone coexists peacefully.
VERDICT For any collection looking for updated and fractured fairy tales, this one will surprise readers with a sweet, realistic ending.
