Gr 3–7—The town of Tarrawagga is "the hole the other holes fall into," observes Australian sixth grader Josh. His family has just moved to a dull house on a dull street in the dull, sad town because they lost all their money. This does not encourage Josh, a leader and star athlete in his old school, to give his new school a fair chance or a share in his talents. Instead, he conducts a simple experiment in human nature—what would happen to him if no one knew he excelled at sports, especially cricket? Life without sports or friends becomes pretty boring until police, "crims," and bullets show up. Josh and the other kids are very likable, relatable, and sincere. The story imparts valuable lessons in sportsmanship and belonging. However, it does contain lengthy (albeit well written and read with enthusiasm) segments of cricket play by plays. These parts and some Australian colloquialisms may spur eager listeners to investigate the sport and country, but others may find them discouraging. The author narrates beautifully.—
