PreS-Gr 1 Little Bear has too many items on his Christmas list and does not want to cull it down. When all the gifts under the tree go to his cousins, he suffers the indignity of watching the coveted skateboard, hobbyhorse, and pogo stick belong to someone else. Unsatisfied with the envelope he has gotten, Little Bear leaves it unopened and retreats under the kitchen table, coming out when his cousins need help figuring out how to play with their toys. The shared experiences are so much fun that Little Bear forgets about his own present, making his reward at the end all the sweeter. While the characters are not very expressive, the subtle touches make Little Bear's spoiled behavior easier to swallow. The illustrations also help the lesson gently unfold through the story, rather than overtly explaining the virtues of patience and sharing, or that the holiday is about more than just presents.-"Joanna K. Just when Nate thought that he, his aunt, and his pet gremlin were due for some downtime, they find Aunt Phil's home ransacked then receive word that wyverns are rampaging in Wales. Might the intruder and the wyvern-disturber be one and the same? And could that person be a renegade Fludd? The series' overarching mystery continues to develop alongside clever episodic adventures.
The third book in a series with plenty of appeal. The Wyverns’ Treasure picks up where The Basilisk’s Lair left off; however, readers need not be familiar with previous titles in order to follow the plot of this one. Ideal for chapter-book readers who enjoy fantasy and adventure. Greasle the gremlin and Nate’s continued inauguration to life as a beastologist offer moments of entertainment: “Caves. Nate swallowed. Why did there always have to be caves?” Kelly Murphy’s detailed pen-and-ink illustrations contribute considerable atmosphere. Readers who have read the first two Nathaniel Fludd books especially will be interested in the mysterious-stranger plotline and will be happy to have him identified.
