Gr 7 Up—Considered by many as an icon of democracy, the White House has been thought of as a magnificent jail by some presidents. The history of this center of power, which is also a family home, is shown in drawings and archival photographs and footage. Viewers see the changes brought on by events and personalities, from the building's conception as the people's house to its burning in 1812 and through its many renovations and additions to its present near-fortress state. Comments by President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and former presidents, first ladies, and first children offer an idea of the awe inspired by its history and the homey quality of life there. Behind-the-scene looks at the work of the house and the presidential staff give a fuller idea of the grandeur of this nearly 225-year-old architectural gem and what it is like to work and live there. The undramatic narration and quiet pace of this documentary make for an unhurried exploration of the site of remarkable and life-changing decisions affecting the country.
VERDICT The two-hour length and straightforward presentation would probably not make this appropriate for classroom use, but it would be useful as supplemental curriculum material as well as for intrigued public library patrons.
