K-Gr 3–This quiet fable shares with readers the message that nothing happens in a vacuum. The poem that forms the text is displayed in two lines per spread, starting with the sun and the sky. As the text slowly unfolds, illustrations show the changes that occur as day fades into night. Readers visit the sky, the beach with a seagull and an otter, a meadow with daffodils, and finally the moon. The poem is shared in its entirety at the end of the book. The heavily outlined illustrations are nice, but don’t blend the way the text indicates. Rather, the illustration leaves the impression of separation instead of coming together.
VERDICT An additional purchase where quiet fables are needed.
