PreS-Gr 1—This series was created to adapt Bible stories into a kid-friendly format that stays true to the scriptural foundation. The first in the series takes young viewers off to Bethlehem. They first learn of Micah and his prophesies about a great leader who was to come, and then viewers meet Mary and Joseph. The retelling is scripturally accurate, and the birth in Bethlehem is the high point. Naturally, the three kings play their roles, but not at the stable, as is scripturally accurate. Herod is mentioned, but not his edict. The story ends before the flight into Egypt. A lively female narrator expressively tells the story while Squiggles, a caterpillar, interacts with the characters and has his own funny adventures. The narrator's discussions with Squiggles are clearly meant to draw in young viewers and personalize the experience for them. The production can be viewed in either English or Spanish, and special features include four music videos with lively versions of traditional Christmas hymns, designed for a sing-along. Bright colors, touches of humor, scriptural accuracy, and a kid-friendly focus make this a winner. In spirit and attitude, it's reminiscent of the original "VeggieTales" programs.
VERDICT This sweet, delightful program will be welcomed by parents, parochial schools, and all those who want to introduce young children to the holiday. With solid production values, it's an excellent choice for those seeking Christmas materials.
