PreS-Gr 1—In this regional version of the traditional holiday song, a dapper young man tells of all the gifts his pretty "sugar" gives him, from a porch swing by a peach tree to 5 Southern belles to 12 magnolia blossoms. The pages soon teem with pecan pies, steamboats, plates of grits, "skillet lickers," and "praline poachers." At the end, the man and his sugar rest exhausted on that porch swing. The illustrations are pleasant, if stiff and amateurish. There's nothing particularly new or imaginative here.—
