The aging King Sagan "The Fair" of Caravaille has ruled his kingdom with care for years to great prosperity. In his waning years, he has given thought to who among his three worthy nephews will take over when he is gone. However, an ancient curse, cast by a prior queen whose family was forcibly removed from the throne, threatens war if King Sagan chooses a successor. Hidden within the curse are the keys to breaking its spell, but the knowledge and skills required might be lost to time. The king and his advisors must seek the wisdom of the oldest sorcerer in Caravaille to decipher the curse's riddle and keep the kingdom from falling into disarray. Written entirely in verse, this is a unique take on what could have been a typical, unoriginal fairy tale. Lyrical writing spruces up tropes of the doomed kingdom, hidden clues with meaning in plain sight, and seeking out knowledge from a wise sage, and hidden clues and meaning in plain sight. The ABCB rhyming style flows well, and the rhymes are clever, humorous, and dramatic. Divided into acts and scenes, the work reads like a play and would be an excellent poetry or theater introduction to writing lyrics or reading Shakespeare.
VERDICT A strong purchase for high school collections.
