K-Gr 3—Hartman reverses story of the wolf in sheep's clothing by having excitement-seeking Little Sheep dress up as a wolf. Her wealthy parents indulge her rebellious whim by knitting her a wolf suit, paying for howling lessons, and sending her to Wolf School. Soon, Little Sheep is invited to dinner at the home of her new friend Little Wolf, where she discovers that her parents are on the menu. Although there are amusing aspects to this fractured retelling and a focus on the positive power of friendship, Hartman's repeated references to the wolves' preference for human flesh are disturbing (For example, Little Wolf's mother always makes him a "big bowl of Stu," the farmer, for lunch). This cautionary tale is enough to turn anyone into a vegetarian.—Sally James, South Hillsborough Elementary School, Hillsborough, CA
