K-Gr 2—Figgy is an adventurous dog who loves his owner George Mustardo but is left alone every day while the boy goes to school. George tells Figgy that he will "be back soon," but "soon" is too long for Figgy. To pass the time, he eats something delicious, like George's report on the history of rock and roll and a food magazine. Then he takes a nap and has snack-inspired dreams. Once awake, Figgy hosts a rock show, a pizza party, and more. When he returns, George can't figure out why Figgy is too tired to play. The pup almost gives himself away due to loneliness but is stopped by his loving family and the newest member of the Mustardo family—a dog named Dot! Images of Figgy's daytime antics are done in pencil and digital cartoons to create whimsical scenes; full spreads depict his outrageous events, like the pizza party.
VERDICT An imaginative story about friendship and being lonely that will work in the classroom and make a fun storytime.
