PreS-Gr 2—Lucy desperately wants a pet, but her mother will not allow it due to limited space and grandmother's allergy. One evening, the child hears a voice from behind her bedroom wall. It turns out to be a secret cat, whom she names Silvring, her perfect match for a pet. Lucy and Silvring head out into the night for an evening of friendship and adventure. It seems that perhaps Lucy's greatest wish has been granted. Largely set in Lucy's home and neighborhood, it is easy for readers to imagine who she is and what her daily routine may be like. Children may also feel a connection with her desire to have an animal of her own to bond with. Her cat is magical and the feeling of joy at their connection is evident. The watercolor illustrations give fluid motion to the progression of the story and the deep blues and purples of night add to the air of mystery and imagination.
VERDICT This appealing mix of realistic fiction with fantasy is exciting and will spark the creative imaginings of readers. Best shared one-on-one or in small group settings.
