PreS–In this latest picture book based on the PBS Kids series Elinor Wonders Why, Elinor (a rabbit) and her pals Ari (a bat) and Olive (an elephant) use their observation skills to learn about the life cycles of different animals. Noting how much Ari’s baby sister looks like Ari and their dad, the crew gets curious about baby butterflies. The digitally rendered characters form hypotheses, collect and compare data, and bring a sense of delight and wonder to their eventual understanding of how the caterpillars transform into butterflies. A short section at the end includes information on other species that experience metamorphosis, and a suggestion for some backyard observation.
VERDICT While there are other preschool materials addressing these topics, this is well-paced and engaging, recommended where the characters are already popular with patrons.
