Gr 9 Up—On most Fridays at the Rosie the Riveter World War II/Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, CA, five women gather to tell their stories as workers at the Kaiser Shipyards during the war. These five genuine Rosie the Riveters were among the thousands who took on jobs once held by men. Along the way, they brought about progress in gender equality in the workforce and helped initiate changes in health care, safety in the workplace, and childcare. Each woman tells an inspiring story, enriched by historical photos and snippets of training films used to educate the women in welding. The five continue to lead vital, productive lives, and their advice to young people is to "follow your dreams" and to live and work for a higher purpose, to "come together for the good of everyone."
VERDICT Classes across the curriculum can use this film, especially history courses studying World War II and the U.S. national park system.
