Gr 9 Up—The author's unique twist, zombies meet Lewis Carroll, comes to a dramatic, if unevenly paced conclusion. Zombie slayer Alice Bell leads a group of killers of the undead against the corporation that is controlling the creatures. This action-packed, makeout-heavy volume is high on wry humor and overwrought romance. However, fans of the series will happily cheer on the strong female protagonist and enjoy the tidy ending.
In this trilogy-ender, zombie-slayer Ali uncovers devastating family secrets; develops intense supernatural powers for fighting zombie and human foes alike; "melds souls" (read: has sex) with bad-boy slayer Cole; and confronts Ms. Smith, mastermind behind the evil Anima corporation. Showalter attempts complexity and sexiness in Ali's on-again/off-again relationship with Cole; instead it's merely inconsistent and cheesy. The zombie world-building logic is equally scattershot.
