RedReviewStarGr 4–6—With frankness, humor, and the guidance of two doctors, this impressive program introduces the physical, emotional, and mental changes that are experienced during puberty. With the help of two older teens, Alie and Damian, the causes and effects of puberty are discussed by diverse teens and explained by two pediatricians. The youngsters don't know all the answers and are often confused about the physical and emotional changes, the confrontations with adults, and problems with peers. Colorful, entertaining diagrams and cartoons help keep the conversation light and provide clarification. The workshop includes five 10–16 minute videos on two DVDs. Two DVDs are identical so students can be divided by gender for the presentation. The program begins with What Is Puberty??, followed by the gender-specific Girls and Puberty and Boys and Puberty. Each DVD concludes with a discussion of how hormones trigger social and emotional changes, called New Emotions, New Feelings. The third DVD addresses the transmission and prevention of HIV and AIDS in a calm and sensitive manner. Each DVD also includes a digital copy of the accompanying 115-page teacher resource book, with numerous activities, pre- and post-tests, and additional information that can be included in lessons. This set offers everything that teachers and students need to become well-informed and prepared for the awesome changes that puberty brings.—MaryAnn Karre, Horace Mann and Thomas Jefferson Elementary Schools, Binghamton, NY
