Gr 8 Up—Korean graphic novelist Kang adapts Machiavelli's classic treatise about politics and power. Kang also explains the history behind the work but mainly uses this volume to provide historical examples of Machiavelli's main points. Each chapter opens with text from the source material and is followed by political figures that demonstrate Machiavelli's points. For example, in "Concerning Mixed Principalities," Kang presents illustrations of Louis XII of France and the Duchy of Milan. The colorful artwork, while reminiscent of manga style, is more realistic than some graphic novels. Kang's images do not distract from but enhance the main message.
VERDICT Teens interested in this period in history will find this book most beneficial. History teachers might consider it as a supplement to already existing classroom materials.
