K-Gr 4—The subtitle sums it up: the steps that transform an origami hat into a boat and then into a shirt have been fleshed out with a story line. A young pirate receives a treasure map from her pirate grandfather. As she follows it, she interacts with the various pictured folds by climbing a mountain, putting on a hat, and so on. After various folds and tears, she discovers the treasure: a special pirate shirt. Teachers and librarians will love the opportunity to exhibit the folds or to lead their audience in doing so. The story itself is not particularly compelling, but it makes a powerful mnemonic. Step-by-step instructions are included at the back of the book. Between the friendly computer-generated graphics, the popular topic, and the interactive element, the book offers wide appeal.—Heidi Estrin, Feldman Children's Library at Congregation B'nai Israel, Boca Raton, FL
Each incident in this story of a pirate girl's search for treasure acts as a reminder of a step in folding the origami model "The Captain’s Shirt." As a story, the text is lacking, but it serves its purpose, and the illustrations smoothly incorporate the starkly white origami-in-progress into the otherwise bright scenery. More traditional instructions and diagrams are also provided.
