Gr 6 Up—Spins on Clement C. Moore's "Night Before Christmas" are staples of the annual gift market. This one, like most, is full of awkward rhymes and riffs off the well-known poem, and the humor is geared to the target audience, in this case people in the Navy and/or those who love them. A little fun, a little silly, this version posits a Master Chief Claus (first name Santa) who lands his hornets and a sub full of SEALS on a ship far out to sea. Mission: deliver Christmas cheer. Final words: "Happy Christmas brave sailors! May peace come to all!" Can't argue with that, but librarians should know that the audience for this title is limited.—

On Christmas Eve, a lone sailor at watch witnesses the arrival of
Master Chief Claus and his squadron of helpers as they deliver
presents to the slumbering fleet at sea. The loose illustrations
are caricaturish, but the rhymes are fairly precise. This treatment
of Moore's classic poem may be best appreciated by military
families.
