Gr 2-4–This illustrated nonfiction book features photographs of 36 large vehicles. Led by a four-person team of mighty mechanics, including two characters who could be people of color (the figures are deliberately nondescript), readers learn about a variety of vehicles. The book is organized by vehicle type, divided into four color-coded sections: trucks and tractors, construction vehicles, emergency vehicles, and monster vehicles. Taking it a step beyond basic construction vehicles and big trucks, this guide spotlights marvelous machines such as a rescue submersible, a NASA crawler-transporter, and a giant floating crane, in addition to perennial favorites (a fire truck, an ambulance, and a bulldozer). The bright, full-scale photographs of each vehicle are labeled with a few pieces of information, but the pictures are really the star of this book. Back matter includes a glossary and an index. The end result is a well-organized, colorful title that will be a hit with readers who like things that go.
VERDICT Purchase for picture book collections that showcase massive vehicles.
