Gr 6—10—With extensive use of art images, a narrator defines and explains the period of time known as the Middle Ages in Europe, starting in the 5th century and ending from the 12th to 15th century. Students learn how the fall of the Roman Empire left trade routes vulnerable to attack from bandits, causing communities to shrink into independent fiefdoms. The feudal system of government and social status maintained order among the people. Despite the general economic collapse, the Catholic Church thrived and became the center of village life. Beautiful cathedrals were built as well as church-run educational institutions. Devout Europeans made pilgrimages to the Holy Land, present day Palestine and Israel. The narrator explains how the pilgrimages led to the Christian Crusades and the bitter aftermath. The Black Death and the subsequent slaughtering of the Jews, who were blamed, are shown in art images. Despite the death and destruction of the Middle Ages, science, art, and literature progressed, forming a foundation for later advancements. This is concise summary will enhance the curriculum in middle school and early high school.—Ann Weber, Bellarmine College Prep., San Jose, CA
