Gr 2–4—This title is designed to allow the novice magician to present a complete magic show with ease. Though some of the tricks ask readers to supply their own playing cards, string, coins, and handkerchiefs, the majority of the illusions are built into the book, including a tear-out page to create a magic wand. The design is colorful and eye-catching, and each trick comes with illustrated step-by-step instructions for the performance. There are a number of playful flaps, such as foxes that transform into chickens when the flaps are lifted in a particular order. Other examples involve a wallet that will flip a bill from side to side, trick cards, and a paper snake thatis magically sliced inside its pop-up box.
VERDICT The delicate nature of the movable parts and the many magic tricks that are dependent on removable pieces make this better suited for home use.
