Gr 2-5–This anthology, filled with information about how folktales from around the world came to be, will delight those interested in legends and lore. The collection is broken into six habitats, and each begins with a story that takes place in the environment from somewhere in the world. Following the short legend, information about flora and fauna, details about mythical creatures, and some of the main mythology surrounding each habitat are shared. Text and illustrations, which fill the entire page, work in conjunction to create gorgeous spreads. The style of the illustration in combination with the text font, which resembles brushed hand lettering, gives the collection a warm, magical feel that works well with the subject matter.
VERDICT Readers looking for a collection of stories might be disappointed to find only a few, but those generally interested in fable and folklore, with extra information about the science and reality behind it, will greatly enjoy this collection.
