PreS-Gr 1—A fresh retelling of one of the most popular Aesop's fables. In this simple tale, a lion helps a hungry mouse find food, and the mouse promises to return the favor. Though the great lion scoffs at the thought of needing help from a tiny creature, he soon learns the value of friendship when the mouse frees him from a trap. The art was created digitally and features bright, vibrant colors, and each page, including the cover, has die-cut holes and peek-through windows of different shapes and sizes to heighten readers' curiosity. Some pages are larger than others, which provides an opportunity to discuss differences in size. The text is presented in a variety of sizes and formats (slanting upwards in places or curving around in others). The book is heartwarming and touching-especially when the mouse rescues the lion in the end, and children will find it accessible. This edition is certain to delight readers and listeners with a valuable life lesson. It would be ideal for storytimes involving the themes of courage, friendship, and compassion.—Janene Corbin, Rosebank Elementary School, Nashville, TN
Flashy design and lots of die-cuts ("Peek-Through Windows on Every Page!") don't compensate for this pedestrian retelling of the familiar fable. Colorful digitally created collage-like illustrations fill the large pages, but awkward design choices make it difficult to interpret some of the images, and the type is hard to read on some pages. No note attributes the tale to Aesop.
