Gr 7 Up–In this adventure fantasy, Rose Moriarty, teenage daughter of the infamous Professor James Moriarty (archnemesis of Sherlock Holmes) is currently making a living solving crimes, fighting monsters, and secretly looking for the headmistress of her beloved private school. Though she now works alone, Rose once had close friends at school; but after their headmistress disappeared and was presumed dead, the academy shut down, and they were forced to scatter. Then the elusive Count Christoph and his ward Clara seek out Rose and her father. The Count has a problem he believes only the Moriarty family can solve. Rose agrees to take the case, hoping she can use him to save her dying friend Nikki, a beloved faculty member from her school. However, she quickly realizes this mystery is far bigger and more dangerous than one person can manage. When news spreads that Nikki is gravely ill, Rose’s former classmates, old friends, and even Jay Watson (son of Sherlock Holmes’s loyal companion) rush to her aid. No longer facing the threat alone, Rose and her makeshift team confront nightmarish bug creatures and the powerful enemy controlling them. Readers who enjoyed Alan Moore’s comic series
The League of Extraordinary Gentleman will love this one. Moore created a universe where notable heroes and villains come together; here Morgenstein creates a universe where the offspring of notable heroes and villains come together. Readers will be thoroughly on board for each character reveals and the famous family to which they belong. Fast-paced chapters with twists and turns will keep readers engaged from the first page to the last. Main characters cue white.
VERDICT A rollicking adventure that can serve for some readers as a bridge from comic books to novels.
