PreS-Gr 2—There is one last chocolate chip cookie. Before Jack can eat it, his mother reminds him that proper manners dictate that he first offer the cookie to everyone else. He obediently offers it to everyone he can think of: his family members, cat, teacher, bus driver, dentist, etc. No one wants the cookie, not even Splagly, the alien in outer space. It turns out that Splagly wants to eat Jack. But Splagly's mother insists that he demonstrate his excellent manners by first offering Jack to others, which he does at great length. Finally, Splagly offers the boy to Jack's mom, who accepts him and compliments the alien on his excellent manners. At last, Jack gets permission to eat the cookie! Unfortunately, after this long excursion, the cookie is pretty much inedible, stale and covered in hairs. The bold, playful artwork is composed in mixed media. Inspired readers and aspiring cooks can make their own "Last Chocolate Chip Cookie" with the recipe on the last page.
VERDICT A delightful treat.
