Gr 3–7—Narrator Kirby Heyborne does an outstanding job voicing the time-travel tale of three tweens: Mel, Bev, and Brandon. Sent from a reenactment of George Washington crossing the Delaware back to that fateful day in 1776, Mel, a history buff, meets Ben Franklin, who uses Leyden jars to recharge Mel's phone. The kids then have to save Washington from a time-traveling assassin. This series launch shows potential, but at times is overwritten. While loyalists chant "death to traitors," drawn-out explanations dispel any sense of urgency. The plot holes are the size of cannonballs. Many notice Mel's sneakers, but no one ever mentions his braces. The support characters are given some depth, and Heyborne's voicing helps it along. Potter has an exciting premise; let's hope he makes the most of it in book two.
VERDICT High production quality, splendid cover art, and the catchy title will at least get tweens to pick it up.
