Gr 9 Up—This documentary looks at Hawaii from ancient to modern times, examining its history, culture, geology, politics, and future. Scholars, botanists, and many others weave together into a single portrait a complex and beautiful place. Native Hawaiians are depicted as a varied and self-aware people, perhaps because the film was made by a local filmmaker, Edgy Lee, rather than by an outsider. The movie works as a single, seamless story or can be viewed as nine distinct chapters easily accessed from the menu. Subjects are covered broadly, but despite such a tremendous amount of information, the program never feels rushed or abbreviated. It also brings up sensitive subjects with a light and nonjudgmental touch. Material is interspersed with stunning nature footage.
VERDICT This movie is an excellent choice for high school or advanced middle school classrooms studying the geology, history, or culture of Hawaii.
