Gr 1—3—Eubie the elf's dream is to join Santa's sleigh team on Christmas Eve, but his enthusiasm in the workshop is too distracting, so instead he is charged with checking over the famous naughty and nice lists. When he realizes that no gifts will be delivered to Bluesville, he uses his magic hat to go and spread Christmas cheer, thus breaking "Santa's most important rule"—to never use his magic hat outside of the North Pole. Though Andreasen's appealing artwork is expressive and jolly, it doesn't save this long-winded and overly simplistic story. Includes CD of Connick's song of the same title. The entire town of Bluesville is on Santa's naughty list. Irrepressibly happy elf Eubie defies Santa's rules to show the townspeople that love, togetherness, and goodwill are what make a happy Christmas. That's Connick's goal, too, and he attempts it through preachy text and a Christmas music CD (included). Andreasen's figures, with their doll-like faces, are cute but vapid.
