Gr 3–6—This nearly wordless graphic novel tells the tale of a man and his giant lizard who help a one-eyed light-up bug save a dying flower and bring light to their lives. The artwork is incredibly detailed and reminiscent of Shaun Tan's The Arrival, but in full color rather than black-and-white. The palette is soft and light when characters encounter the bug, and darker and reddish when they voyage through the forest. The fantastic creatures are sure to entice readers, who will wonder about their origins and where such a fanciful world exists. The story is somewhat difficult to follow, as there are many creatures who are not part of the story arc, but fortunately the author includes a short synopsis in the back. Although the story arc is a bit challenging, the artwork is stunning.
VERDICT Fans of graphic novels will be impressed by the intricate illustrations in this fantasy.–Ellen Conlin, Naperville Public Library, IL
