Gr 7 Up—Several supernatural beings with otherworldly powers who represent the forces of good and evil find themselves in modern-day Tokyo, where suddenly their powers no longer work. The story mixes action with comedy, as the Devil King navigates our ordinary world, even taking a part-time job at a fast food restaurant called MgRonald to make ends meet. But the longer he works there, the more his focus shifts from conquering the world to making his way up the management chain at his restaurant. And then the Devil King's archenemy Emilia Justina the Hero shows up to try to finish what she started. This "light novel" with manga-style illustrations is very densely written, and is packed with so much exposition that in many ways it does not feel like the beginning of a series at all. This work has been adapted into an anime, which aired in 2014, so it would be most appreciated and understood by readers who saw it and are looking for more information about the story and the characters.
VERDICT For fans of the The Devil Is a Part-Timer anime.
