Gr 3–5—This new edition combines two previously published works: The Curious Lobster and The Curious Lobster's Island, originally published in 1935 and 1939, respectively. Mr. Lobster loves his home in the ocean, but when he hears about the river and the land, his curiosity pushes him to explore new terrain. Along the way he meets many friends (and some creatures who aren't so friendly) and learns a lot about the world. Each adventure is related in its own chapter, but the episodes do string together into a cohesive narrative. The humor often relies on an Alice in Wonderland—style logic, which may appeal to some and baffle others. This title could work well as a read-aloud, providing ample opportunities for discussing the natural world and interpersonal (or inter-animal) dynamics. The slow pacing may deter some kids, but those who enjoy quiet stories with humorous characters will want to keep reading.
VERDICT Recommended for those looking for a classic-style read-aloud. An additional purchase for large collections.
