Gr 5–8—Clear and well-organized texts describe the origins, expansion, consolidation, achievements, declines, and legacies of ancient civilizations. Although the volumes are brief, they provide adequate background and context and are forthright about the strengths and weaknesses of each civilization and its contributions to world culture. Sidebars add information about remarkable places, people, and curiosities— for example, the location of Genghis Khan's tomb. Average-quality maps show locations and the extent of the empires; illustrations are an attractive combination of drawings and photos of locations, ruins, and artifacts. There are many extant sets on these topics, and this set breaks no new ground in either content or interpretation, making most of the books supplemental purchases.
