K-Gr 2—After waking up in the evening and starting her routine, Little Witch finds a pink suitcase on the front porch of her tree house and decides to magic it open. Her spell ends up opening everything but the pink suitcase. Little Witch decides to seek out some help from the various witches in her neighborhood, including the Witch Doctor and the Traveling Witch. They tell her that the suitcase is for big witches, and that she will be able to open it when she's "big and clever enough." Little Witch is determined to figure it out, and she is ultimately successful, with the contents of the case sending her to Witch School. The charmingly old-fashioned illustrations have both detail and whimsy, and children will especially enjoy the foldout flaps.—
Stacy Dillon, LREI, New York CityWhen a mysterious suitcase appears on Lizzy the Little Witch's doorstep, her efforts to unlock it cause everything around her to (disastrously) fly open...except for the suitcase. The resolution is disappointing, but soft, moonlit illustrations reflect the story's whimsy, and bi-fold pages allow readers to reveal the chaotic effects of Lizzy's failed "Hocus-pocus" spells in a ta-da fashion.
