Gr 9 Up—The hallmark of these volumes is the splendid, full-color reproductions of artwork, monuments, and tourist-attracting landscapes. The eye-popping visuals and clear, enlightening captions that accompany them bring each civilization's contributions to life and go a long way toward helping readers understand why the ancient Chinese, Egyptians, and Inca deserve to be studied and command awe to the present day. However, the main texts are dense and somewhat plodding. Specific facts, such as those needed for reports, will prove difficult to access, especially for younger students. All glossaries are brief, particularly in Ancient China, and none of the titles includes pronunciation guides. Inca lacks sufficient maps. Overall, these are additional purchases for large school and public library collections.—Carol Goldman, Queens Library, NY
