Gr 4 Up–From national nonprofit organization ChopChop Family comes a title focused on child nutrition. Every section includes information about making healthy choices and “Let’s All Talk about…” pages discussing various foods, their nutrition, and how best to prepare the item. Recipes call for whole wheat pasta and dark leafy greens, and there is information on reading food labels. The book is not designed for children to fly solo in the kitchen; adults are encouraged to help, and recipes are catered to school-age cooks. The title presents recipes for breakfast through dinner with snacks for the afternoon. Breakfast recipes are in two categories: fast and more time consuming for weekends. Lunchtime recipes are lunch box–friendly sandwiches and salads. Snack recipes are homemade dips and healthy dippers. Dinner recipes are more heartier and range from meat- free to steaks. The cuisine is full flavored and features Middle Eastern, European, Mexican, Jewish, Asian, Filipino, and Indian recipes with photography that will tempt readers to start cooking. The dessert section is fruit filled with a few cookie and bar recipes. On the downside, no swaps or changes are listed for those with special dietary needs.
VERDICT Purchase where nutrition-focused juvenile titles are needed.
