PreS-Gr 1—Entries to a leveled series, these four stories support phonics-based reading instruction. Each title focuses on a specific letter, or letter combinations, and includes pronunciation charts, reading tips, identification of "tricky" words, and discussion questions. Celebrity Celia, Hugh Is New, and Owen the Astronaut capture familiar situations: performing on stage, imagining a trip to outer space, and welcoming a new classmate. Unfortunately, in Celia, words like "physicist," and "unique" seem out of place for emergent readers. With its macabre presentation of "centaurs," "zombies," and "ghouls" joining the "deceased," The Cemetery Dance also misses the mark for its intended audience. While the expressive cartoon illustrations accurately reflect the narratives, the stories are uninspired.—Gloria Koster, West School, New Canaan, CT
