Gr 3–5—Cammie (aka Fussbudget) and Tessa (aka Fireball) are the daughters of the first female president of the United States. In this installment in the series, Tessa's piggy bank is stolen and treasure is missing from the White House lawn. It appears that the girls have two mysteries to solve at once-or are the thefts somehow related? The writing style is smart and witty, and has an upbeat feel. The author depicts kids in a realistic and respectful way. The book's pacing, short chapters, and plot twists will engage reluctant readers, and the inclusion of boy characters and their fun banter with the girls creates wide appeal.—Cass Mabbott, Seattle Public Library, WA
In the fourth series installment, Tessa's lost her piggy bank, but there's something a lot more valuable than pennies inside. In book five, a fossilized dinosaur egg has been stolen from the National Museum of Natural History. Freeman deftly distills science and political goings-on to middle-grade level, the mystery plots are engaging (if obvious), and Tessa's sister Cammie's narration is accessible. Review covers these First Kid Mystery titles: The Case of the Missing Dinosaur Egg and The Case of the Piggy Bank Thief.
