The Case of the Girl in Grey

Gr 4–6—Adam, Mary, Jane, and Allegra are back. Mary Somerville, the smartest girl in England, needs them to look into her cousin Lizzie's engagement. Mary doesn't trust Lizzie's fiancé, Sir Caleb Gulpidge. She thinks he is after the girl's money and doesn't have her best interests in mind. When the four girls approach the house, they encounter a mysterious girl in gray. Is she connected somehow? What are Lizzie's fiancé and father really up to? Narrator Nicola Barber's unique voices bring to life the characters' personalities. Stratford expertly intertwines mystery, adventure, and complex character growth. Although the historical discrepancies may confuse some listeners, they don't detract from the engaging story. The secondary characters are not as well developed, but the unique and clever personalities of the four main ones should make up for it.
