Gr 9 Up—This program traces the history of atomic warfare from the Robert Oppenheimer-led Manhattan Project through the Red Scare of the Cold War and into the nonproliferation efforts following the Cuban Missile Crisis. Interviews with historians and political figures as well as newly declassified and restored archival footage illuminate more than 70 years of political history and the atom bomb's cultural impact. Visual and sound quality are excellent, and the narration holds the viewer's interest for a nearly two-hour running time. A fascinating viewing for anyone interested in 20th-century history.
VERDICT The length may limit this program's usefulness in some classroom settings, though scene selections focus on specific subject matter (the race with Nazi Germany to develop the bomb or Soviet espionage).
